Stability and Recovery for the U.S. Economy
Our nation’s financial sector faces its greatest crisis since the Great Depression. Over the last two years, real estate prices have dropped dramatically, causing trillions of dollars of losses. These unprecedented losses combined with a systemic lack of confidence in our financial institutions have prevented banks from lending and frozen our credit markets. The threat of a broad financial collapse is real. Credit for small businesses, home loans, student loans and car loans will dry up, people will see their retirement account balances plummet, and companies all over the country will have trouble meeting their payroll without decisive action. In sum, action was necessary to stabilize our markets and avoid widespread economic meltdown.

Education
Improving our nation’s education system has been a top legislative priority of Senator Sununu. He believes education is the most important investment that society can make in an individual. He also believes that the federal government should honor its funding commitments to the states, which is why he has been a leading voice in favor of the federal government assuming its full share of special education funding. John has also worked hard during recent financial market difficulties to ensure that students continue to have access to student loans. Furthermore, he has been a strong advocate of charter schools and the options they provide for parents who want to ensure the best education possible for their children.

Energy
Senator Sununu has advocated a national energy policy that protects the environment, increases domestic production, encourages alternative and renewable energy development, and limits government interference in the energy marketplace. Time and again, Senator Sununu has stood up for New Hampshire values, fiscal discipline, and sound and realistic policy, without regard to political party. Moreover, Senator Sununu supports immediate relief to ease energy prices, and, in true New Hampshire spirit, John continues to fight to increase Low-Income Heating Assistance Program funding for our state.

Environment
New Hampshire is second to none when it comes to protecting its water, air and land for our children and grandchildren. The Granite State’s home-grown conservation and environmental organizations work hand-in-hand with the hunting, fishing, hiking, boating, and tourism communities to achieve a balanced, “multi-use” approach to conservation. In that spirit, Senator Sununu is committed to protecting New Hampshire’s lands and waterways through expanding designated wilderness areas, fostering clean energy development, establishing reachable goals to mitigate climate change, and by supporting the strict enforcement of our nation’s clean air and water laws and regulations.

Housing
Senator Sununu has been out in front of the recent rise in the number of delinquent mortgages, organizing a series of foreclosure prevention workshops throughout the State that bring together NH and federal officials, mortgage counselors, lenders and borrowers to offer solutions for those at risk of foreclosure. For years, he has also been a leading Senate advocate for improved regulation of the housing finance giants, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and was pleased to support legislation recently signed into law to strengthen their oversight. Additionally, John has been the Senate’s leader on efforts to reduce the administrative burden on public housing authorities and to free up those closest to the people in need to come up with innovative affordable housing solutions. Immigration
Throughout America’s history, legal immigration has inspired cultural diversity, new ideas and energy, and fueled economic growth and the creation of new opportunities for every American. Unfortunately, many aspects of our immigration system have deteriorated over the years and now require significant reform. Real Immigration Reform – In 2007, John opposed the Comprehensive Immigration Reform bill because it would have rewarded those who broke the law by giving them an advantage over those who play by the rules and are on the legal path to citizenship.

Shipyard
John was convinced that the Department of Defense (DoD) made a critical mistake in its decision to include the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNS) on the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) list. He worked tirelessly along side the “Save Our Shipyard” contingent, which consisted of the Yard’s workforce, town and state officials, and his Congressional colleagues from New Hampshire and Maine, to prove that keeping the Yard open was essential to both the Navy’s overall mission and our country’s national security.

Federal Taxes
Keeping federal taxes low and reforming U.S. tax policy remain two of Senator Sununu’s highest priorities in the Senate. The current bloated tax code imposes inefficiencies and harmful impacts on taxpayers, businesses and the entire U.S. economy. Further, its distortive structure contains thousands of special exemptions that unfairly favor some industries and activities over others. In its place, Senator Sununu has fought for a sound tax policy that takes as little as necessary from American taxpayers and returns decision-making to individuals and families.
