Shaheen Flip-Flops on Energy

Nashua Telegraph: “A former vocal opponent of the Seabrook nuclear power plant, Shaheen said last weekend more nuclear power should be ‘part of the mix.’” (Nashua Telegraph, 9/10/08)

New York Sun: “And on nuclear power, which is a hot button issue in New Hampshire, home to the Seabrook nuclear power plant, for much of Ms. Shaheen's early career, she seemed now to embrace the plant and the idea of nuclear power.” (New York Sun, 9/10/08)
          - Sun: ‘”I think nuclear does have to be part of the energy mix. I think we've seen with Seabrook, once it came online, it's provided pretty reliable energy,’ she said.” (New York Sun, 9/10/08)
          - Sun: “Told about her comments on nuclear power, Mr. Sununu noted that she had served as the campaign manager to a Portsmouth lawyer, Paul McEachern, who ran against his father, Governor Sununu, opposing the Seabrook plant.” (New York Sun, 9/10/08)

Foster’s Daily Democrat: “Before Shaheen spoke, the state GOP issued a top 10 list of things Shaheen wouldn't address. Number nine was her alleged ‘shifting energy rhetoric,’ rooted in her clear opposition to domestic drilling in May 2007 but more recent attempts to shift her position and ‘run from her previous comments.’” (Foster’s Daily Democrat, 8/28/08)

Shaheen Flip-Flops on Taxes

Nashua Telegraph: “As a first-time candidate for governor in 1996, Shaheen's made more references to New Hampshire than in Wednesday's speech including her pledge to veto a sales or income tax.” (Nashua Telegraph, 8/28/08)
          - Telegraph: “And let me be clear on an issue I know is of great importance in our Granite State," Shaheen said in 1996, "Let me renew my pledge to veto any sales or income tax. We don't need new taxes. We need lower electric rates. And we need better schools . . .” (Nashua Telegraph, 8/28/08)
          - Telegraph: “Three years later, Shaheen signed into law a new statewide property tax that assumed for state education aid more than $300 million that previously had been raised and kept as local property taxes. In her 2000 re-election campaign, Shaheen dropped her broad-based tax pledge and the following year unsuccessfully lobbied for a sales tax dedicated to public school aid.” (Nashua Telegraph, 8/28/08)

Union Leader : “Her latest ad features a guy in a suit digging a hole….It's a cute ad, and her delivery is great. But where's the substance? And where's the honesty? In the ad, Shaheen claims to support tax cuts for the middle class. But as governor, she proposed a sales tax for New Hampshire, which amounts to a big tax increase for low- and middle-income families.” (Union Leader, 9/3/08)
